The Black Tux: making weddings easy for grooms and guests

I’ve just been a part of the National Vintage Wedding Fair last week in Charlton London {more on that in a separate blog post} There was a host of stunning bridal dresses from various talented bridal dress suppliers there on display for brides to try on and on the catwalk too!

But what about the groom? The groom’s job to dress himself on his big day seems a much easier task as the choices are a lot more streamlined compared to a bride’s with her plethora of choices and styles. For the groom, isn’t it usually just between a suit, a tux or suspenders? Or tops hats and tails for the more fancy? A tie, bow tie or a cravat? However, having limited choices does not mean limited style. The grooms can be as stylish as the brides no doubt! And of course it all depends on the look the couple is after… casual, semi-casual, formal, black tie, beach / summer, or themed…

Whatever your style is, my top tip is always to show your personality! It’s like finding your USP and featuring it! Don’t be afraid to deviate from the norm. Embrace colour. Embrace some carefree and wild. The most memorable weddings I’ve done and indeed the ones that get featured on national wedding blogs are those with a healthy dose of the couple’s personality.

From a photographer’s point of view, white doesn’t show very well in photographs especially white on white {white bouquet against a white dress, white cake against white walls}. Go for foliage, go for colour accents especially when the dress is white; a pop of colour adds contrast and drama. For grooms, think about patterned or colourful ties / bow ties and waistcoats. There is no rule that everything has to be matching.

Embrace fun and adventure. I’ve had a bride wear a 2 part wedding dress, the top part was made of black lace. She looked fabulous and ultra-chic. It’s not so much as being bold, it’s more being free and fearless. It’s your day; own it!
